This is Why You Never Follow Your Dreams

There’s a GREATNESS inside of you. You’ve felt it before.

And you’ll feel it again. You bask in this GREATNESS for a fraction of a second while you allow yourself to envision the life you’ve always imagined.

So, the second this GREATNESS arises in your gut, what is the vision you have?

Do you see yourself getting drafted by your favorite NFL team? Becoming an author? Starting a fashion blog or YouTube channel? Getting that degree you’ve always wanted? Losing those extra pounds that seem to have followed you around since Thanksgiving 10 years ago?

What is it? Think about it.

What vision comes back for a visit every now and then, delivering a very small and very quiet message that says,

Now, why does this vision still remain a dream of yours? Why is this greatness within you so suppressed that it can’t even see the light of day?

Here’s why…

In those fleeting moments when GREATNESS feels brave and confident enough to strap his gloves on and step into the ring, FEAR and RESISTANCE kick his ASS because you’re not conscious enough to recognize when and why it’s happening.

Announcer: Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the main event. In this corner, weighing in at 500 pounds, undefeated in every single fight, FEAR and RESISTANCE! And in this corner, weighing in at a measly 60 pounds (does this guy eat?), the contender, GREATNESS!

Announcer: Opponents ready? Fight!

Announcer: OH! FEAR and RESISTANCE pound on GREATNESS! He has no chance! An uppercut! A dropkick?! A swift blow to the chest! This is ugly! He’s down! GREATNESS IS DOWN FOR THE COUNT! What an embarrassment! Why did this guy even show up today!? FEAR and RESISTANCE WIN AGAIN! 100% UNDEFEATED! This is undeniably the most amazing record in the history of your life!

2 weeks later…

Announcer: Ladies and gentleman, a quick update on GREATNESS. I ask that you all keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he is still in a coma. No one can seem to wake him up. FEAR and RESISTANCE have been his only visitors. It’s looking pretty grim.

Poor greatness. Was he not strong enough? Not brave enough? Did he even train?

Probably not. Because every time he went to the gym, FEAR and RESISTANCE locked the door. Whenever he told someone he was going to finally win, FEAR and RESISTANCE laughed in his face and told him he was a “loser,” a “stupid idiot.” That he wouldn’t ever amount to anything. When he started training, FEAR and RESISTANCE told him he was a fraud, an embarrassment, and that he had no idea what he was doing. As a result, GREATNESS hid himself from the world.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

This is important to realize. FEAR and RESISTANCE live inside of you. Combined, it’s a fire ablaze that you consciously and sub-consciously continue to dump buckets of gasoline on top of. GREATNESS doesn’t stand a chance when you let FEAR and RESISTANCE run your life. For example, every single time you experience negative self-talk and you talk yourself out of pursuing something, FEAR and RESISTANCE win.

Similarly, every time you think of something you want to do but then talk yourself out of it by immediately thinking of all the reasons why you shouldn’t do that thing, FEAR and RESISTANCE win again.

“You don’t have enough time.” said FEAR and RESISTANCE.

“You’re not smart enough…you’ve never done this before.” said FEAR and RESISTANCE.

“Who do you think you are? Everyone is going to laugh at you.” said FEAR and RESISTANCE.

“You’re too old. It’s too late.” said FEAR and RESISTANCE.

See? These guys are real A-HOLES!

Now, how do you start to win life’s matches against FEAR and RESISTANCE? It’s 100% possible. Without a doubt. However, it takes some practice on your part.
  • Firstly, recognize when they arrive. Say hello to them, welcome them, and thank them for being present in your life (because they do serve some good here and there). This can be challenging at first because this has been a pattern your entire life.
  • Secondly, acknowledge that they exist and understand that they are only comprised of old thoughts and emotional baggage.
  • Understand that they are bullies who make you think bad thoughts about yourself that ARE.NOT.TRUE.
  • Understand that FEAR and RESISTANCE arise when your GREATNESS is screaming from the depths of your soul, “You have to pursue this!”
  • Above all, walk the journey holding the hand of GREATNESS and let FEAR and RESISTANCE tag behind, carrying all the heavy luggage. You’ll need what they’re carrying – only every now and then.

All of a sudden, with a little practice and determination, you’ve woken up and found yourself. At last.

As Steven Pressfield says in “The War of Art”

“Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do.  The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it… the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that that enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul. That’s why we feel so much Resistance. If it meant nothing to us, there’d be no Resistance.”

In conclusion, it is time to get conscious. Begin your journey. Greatness needs a win.

    • I think most of us do, Meagen! Once you become conscious of when and why it is happening to you, then you can overcome it. I wish you the best of luck on your journey through life and remember, if it scares you, it means you should go for it! Don’t let your fear hold you back. What’s waiting on the other side is far too valuable. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I appreciate it!
