If you don’t already know, I read Dave Ramsey’s book, “Total Money Makeover” over a month ago. My husband and I immediately started to budget. Why? Because budgeting and spending less money is one of the easiest and most effective ways to become debt-free and achieve wealth. The motivation behind all of this is to be able to live the life we imagine while we’re here on this mysterious thing we call earth.

Budgeting groceries is one of the first things we decided to look at.

This was a LONG time coming and it’s something I should have been mindful of 10 years ago when I first started grocery shopping on my own. When we sat down and examined and analyzed our finances and our overall spending, the amount that was being spent on groceries was MIND BOGGLING.

Some months, we spent over $1000…

…and there’s only three of us! My 19-month-old obviously doesn’t eat as much as we do so essentially, I was spending $1000/month for TWO people. That’s wild!

After seeing these numbers on paper, I finally decided something needed to be done. We then looked back on the previous six months and again added together all of the money that was spent on groceries. If you looked in our window at the time, you would have seen us sitting at the kitchen table with pens, papers, and highlighters ALL OVER THE PLACE. Oh, and a couple bowls of ice cream because, like, how can you budget without ice cream?

After looking at about six months’ worth of grocery spending, we decided we needed to come up with an average.

That average ended up being around $150/week. At first, this number gave me severe anxiety because I am someone who likes to have A LOT of food in the house at all times. I don’t like seeing a close-to-empty refrigerator. First world problems, I know. It’s sad.

How are we going to be able to buy a week’s worth of groceries for only $150!?

I didn’t think it was humanly possible.

Then, I tried it. And I tried it again. And again and again. Every week now, I am able to stick to the budget and some weeks I even fall under budget. I lose my breath when I even think about going shopping before beginning our Total Money Makeover. The fact that I wouldn’t even flinch while swiping my debit card in order to pay a $300 grocery bill??? UGH.

The anxiety I experienced around budgeting food has turned into pure excitement. I didn’t expect this to happen because I’ve never budgeted anything in my life and I never even thought I would be interested in budgeting. As I have mentioned before, I am not a math person. I am not a numbers person.

Anything involving finances used to make me want to VOMIT.

When it came to money, I associated it with fear and “feeling dumb” and that has been one of my biggest mistakes.

So, what do I actually buy with $150? Surprisingly, I am able to buy a decent amount of food. It’s all pretty healthy and a lot of it is organic. We don’t eat many processed foods around here so I don’t usually buy anything that comes in a bag or a box (e.g. Cheez-Its, potato chips, cereal, cookies, etc.). I buy a ton of fresh produce, fish, and I also buy organic and grass-fed meats. I have been a long-time fan of the Paleo diet even though I am not super strict about it. I somewhat support the whole “everything in moderation” thing.

As I say in my video, I hope this inspires some of you to start your Total Money Makeover or even just inspires you to start at least budgeting your groceries.

You cannot afford NOT to budget.

I am learning this too late in life but early enough to truly do something about it. When you find yourself complaining about not having enough money or wishing you had more money, ask yourself if you would have more if you started to budget. Hint: The answer is always “YES.” If you don’t want to budget, don’t complain about your financial situation. Most of the time, you are the reason you haven’t been able to experience more wealth. It’s never too late to wake up to this. Trust me.
